Sunlight may Reduce Breast Cancer

Exposure to sunlight may reduce your risk of advanced breast cancer, according to new research from Stanford University.

The study followed 4,000 women between the ages of 35 and 79, and evaluated the effects of long-term sun exposure. Women with a light skin color who had high sun exposure had half the risk of developing advanced breast cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the breast) as women with low sun exposure.

Sun exposure may work to prevent cancer because it increases the levels of vitamin D in your body. While you can get some vitamin D from your diet, up to 90 percent comes from your exposure to sunlight.

Update on Janet Ng

"If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded."
- Maya Angelou

Two weeks ago we ran an article about a fund-raiser for Janet Ng. Last week Dr. Flora had some comments for Janet. The story continues:

James,

I spoke with Janet this morning. She had her surgery on Monday. Today she received the path report which said it was a benign Phyllodes Tumor and the lymph was not involved.

I looked it up in the Merck Manual and it said it is a “rare form of fibroadenoma, cystosarcoma phyllodes, is characterized by its large size and rapid growth. Like a malignant tumor, it tends to recur locally if inadequately removed, but it only rarely metastasizes to regional lymph nodes or distant organs. Radical mastectomy is unwarranted; wide excision or simple mastectomy generally is the treatment of choice.”

She is doing very well and told me I could let you know the results of the report for the newsletter.

Hi, I have breast cancer - why not???

"No Braggs or olive oil ever should be allowed in the Institute, and not more than 1/4th of an avocado or the same amount of seed or nut cheese should be allowed a student who is challenged with cancer, heart condition or diabetes."

CD, New Zealand

I'm passing your query on to Dr. Flora, who wrote the article [Dr. Flora Responds to Janet Ng]. She'll answer it much better than I can.

Dr. Flora responds:

Look at the DVD "Eating" from RAVEdiet.com. 470 physicians in DC at the 1st International Continuing Medical Education Seminar on Nutrition with George Washington University sponsoring it, got the DVD and it's changed the lives of everyone who has seen it.

I've already seen research that the test results with olive oil come back causing cancer 17% of the time. Do you want a quart of gasoline on your fire instead of a gallon? You will not get well with any clarified oil in your diet. Only 2 ounces of avocado diced on your Energy Soup at one time, or a tablespoon of flax seed (not oil) that has been soaked for 10 minutes and blended in with some greens or soaked almonds, or watermelon, etc., or the wonderful oils that are present in such great foods as dulse, purslane, buckwheat greens, sunflower/sesame seed cheese, etc.

Please Google Braggs Liquid Aminos and look past the 1st page to the conversations of various users with Patricia Braggs. I personally was crippled by using it and it nearly ruined my kidneys. I wrote to Patricia about it twice and she never answered me. You will find a great letter written by a woman who worked for her. See what happens when you quit using it. Your legs will open back up. Your veins and arteries will come back to life as the capillaries begin to flow again.

Please read "The No Dairy Anti-Breast Cancer Program" by Dr. Jane Plant of England, who lost a breast, had chemo and radiation 5 times when it appeared in the other breast and spread all over her trunk, and who got involved with the China Study. Women don't have cancer in China who have never used dairy. She threw away her ghee and yogurt and that was 2 decades ago with no return.

Peace and Love,
Flora

Thank you for your reply Dr.

Before I got my cancer I was living for six years under the close vicinity of a couple of huge power pylons, my husband left me in a dreadful area with two young children and I was consuming lots of extra virgin olive oil. Lots as a dressing and in smoothies.

I think flaxseed oil is the best one for my situation; my skin is very dry and I don't eat any dairy or get any other fat; no wheat or flesh either.

I chucked the Braggs without any further ado.

Kind regards, CD.

C, you need good oils. The flax seed (not the oil) is very valuable and necessary for you. One tablespoon soaked in a little water for 10 minutes and then blended with watermelon and greens is perfect.

The wonderful oils in avocado (no more than 2 ounces diced on top of the Energy Soup) are perfect in the a.m. In the p.m., a couple of ounces of almond cream made with 12 organic almonds soaked overnight and rinsed and blended with fresh water.

Use a natural bristle body brush dry and on wet skin use a loofa. Always brush towards the heart and use no soap or anything with isopropyl alcohol, or wax, or cream.

Thank you lovely lady. Which of the books do you recommend I buy to guide me with my diet and my tumour? I'll send you a picture so you know what I'm about - my hand and arm down that side are swollen and there is nerve pain, which I'm taking Panadol 6x / day for.

[Photo shows a large tumor extruding from the side of her breast. Very shocking. Deleted by editor at the request of Dr. Flora, for privacy reasons.]

[One of these years in the future, people will recoil in horror that once there was actually surgery to remove something that is basically all over one's body but is just sticking out somewhere in the weakest area of communication, where someone has been prevented from sharing feelings. - Flora]

C, I have worked with people who have had the whole half of a breast or more in that same condition and worse.

Wheatgrass3 The wheat grass poultice works miracles. You must consider that your very life is at stake and that the blended Energy Soup is going to save your life.

My first thought is why did you let it get this far. You must really want to live and get rid of any thoughts of wanting to 'pay someone back' for something that happened earlier in your life.

Many women heal but go back to a way of eating that will promote the growth of the cells because they are too cold also. You need to stay sweaty and uncomfortable for all of that stuff to soften up. Let me know where you have been and who has used wheat grass juice poultices for you. You need to have someone make the wheat grass juice for you if you cannot make it yourself, and then pour it on the pulp which has been packed on top of your breast, with towels and plastic underneath.

I want to get permission from you to allow our conversation to be shared with others so that they can learn. If you would rather not, that's OK. The wheat grass juice will die in 15 minutes so it has to be done every 20 minutes or so. You must not eat one drop of oil or one bite of grain because the cancer will feed on this.

Yes, by all means use the process to help anyone who needs it.

I have been taking many Natures Sunshine products including paw paw cell regulator and pau d'arco and stemcell enhance; but I think the problem is that I don't give up entirely on food. I've lost lots of weight but find it hard to get excited about the juices and salads...

Do the energy soup and make some sauerkraut to go with it. Everything needs to be blended.

I do okay on fruit...

No you don't. You have to eat fruits every hour or you get hungry and you can't get everything you need on fruit. You get their sugars for energy, but you need the green chlorophyll and minerals from dulse and chlorophyll for healing.

but get hungry and then I cheat in a cafe.

Don't go to the cafe anymore until you have your healed breast again. You don't need the coffee.

So its an emotional as well as a physical 'craving.'

You may be addicted to the caffeine and the atmosphere.

Or just lack of self-discipline.

Take a look at your picture again and tell yourself you want to get well and live.

I have been doing lots (of pills as above) but no it hasn't stopped it. I bought some wheatgrass but when I heard it was grown in potting mix a doubt crept in as to how good it was, or not. I am going to plant some today in soil...

My friends will come in and tell you about the soil and how to prepare it..

Okay. No oil or grain. Also no sugar, salt, flesh or dairy? I understand my body needs enzymes, but is that all it can have; categorically and nothing else?

You don't want anything that doesn't have enzymes in it, because that will not grow new cells. Dead food does not grow new healthy cells. Living food grows cells and gets rid of old dead cells by sloughing them off as the new cells push up.

I'm sorry to harp on, it's just that I have read around and there are so many different methods. Some people say 80% raw with anything else. What do you think?

100% for now. With live food you will live; with dead food you feed your cells food that will make them die.

Wheatgrass pulp goes onto the tumour from the juiced wheatgrass, and then the juice is poured onto it and left on for 15 minutes. How many applications should I do and do you want me to drink any?

I want you to assimilate wheatgrass juice from both ends, with 4 ounce implants and with taking 2 ounces orally one sip at a time, chewing it as if it were a solid for 2 minutes as it becomes absorbed in the roof of your mouth and under your tongue and in your lymphatic system, and rushes down into your breast tissue from the inside as you put the poultices on the outside.

Every 20 minutes or so you put new wheatgrass juice on top of the poultice. If you need help, put out the word and people will help. You can either go to an institute where they do that every day, or do it at home. Don't make the juice and stop and have a conversation with anyone. Get it in immediately.

Peace and Love,
Flora

Causes of contact dermattis

(HealthDay News) -- Notice an itchy, red rash after wearing that new silver bracelet? Has that new summer perfume caused itchy skin around your wrists and neck? Got an itchy scalp from the new shampoo? Did your face breakout after using certain skin care products or cosmetics? The reason could be as simple as contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis is the name given to the various rashes that result when the skin comes in contact with something it is allergic to. Symptoms of contact dermatitis include skin redness, itching that often becomes painful, skin thickening, and scaling.

Following are the top 10 causes of contact dermatitis recently identified by Mayo Clinic physicians:

Nickel, commonly found on jewelry clasps or buttons.
Gold, usually worn as jewelry.
Balsam of Peru, a fragrance used in skin care products and perfume.
Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used in vaccines.
Neomycin sulfate, a topical antibiotic.
Fragrance mix, which is comprised of eight of the most common flavorings found in various products.
Formaldehyde, a carcinogenic preservative that is found in almost all skin & body care products as well as in paper products, paints, building materials, medications, household cleaners and fabric finishes.
Cobalt chloride, a metal found in medical products, hair dye, antiperspirants, and in snaps, buttons and tools.
Bacitracin, a topical antibiotic.
Quaternium-15, a formaldehyde releasing preservative also found in virtually all skin care products, shampoos, conditioners, and in industrial products such as pains, polishes and waxes.

In addition, a rapidly growing concern among scientists is the increasing rate at which people are becoming allergic to parabens which are used as preservatives in nearly all skin and body care products. Parabens have been connected with promoting breast cancer and upsetting hormonal imbalance, primarily in women since they use more products over larger areas of their body and are therefore exposed to them for longer periods than men are.

Breast cancer pill saves few lives, study finds

(Reuters) - Tamoxifen, the pill that prevents breast cancer in high-risk women, does not appear in the long run to save many lives, U.S. researchers reported on Monday: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060724/hl_nm/cancer_tamoxifen_dc_2.

Dear Jim,

Thanks for the newsletter.  Please let Jeannie know that Deborah and Janine say hello from the Detroit area.  We were there in l997.

I am glad to say that I am still alive, surviving stage 4 breast cancer.  The doctors thought i would be dead two-and-a-half years ago.

Jesus is a healer.  Spread the good news.

Flawed studies on breast cancer and dietary fat

[Don't miss the note at the end! - Jim Carey]

Flawed studies on breast cancer and dietary fat
What the mainstream media doesn't want you to know.

by T. Colin Campbell, PhD

The recent study that low fat diets don't prevent breast cancer in a large cohort of women now confirms similar results of another large study, the Nurses' Health Study at Harvard. But this interpretation for these hugely expensive studies is seriously misleading and is more about the way we investigate and publicize the dietary fat and breast cancer relationship than it is about the results obtained.

Both studies were prompted by a major 1982 National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report that was the first major document to recommend cutting fat consumption from 40% of calories to 30% to prevent cancer risk, a report that I co-authored. But the researchers who subsequently organized these two very large studies misinterpreted our report's findings, then designed studies that were seriously flawed, despite recommendations to the contrary.

Aside from their recommendation on fat, the committee also advocated increased consumption of "fruits, vegetables, and whole grain cereal products" but cautioned that this did not apply to the effects of individual nutrients. They made clear that the 30% fat recommendation was arbitrary and was only meant as a "practical target" to monitor dietary change, adding that the evidence on fat even suggested, "the[sic] data could be used to justify an even greater reduction". Together, these recommendations emphasized the effect of whole foods on cancer risk, not the effects of individual nutrients.

Unfortunately, the investigators of these two large studies failed to comprehend these recommendations on two accounts. Both groups initially sought my views -- in seminars and discussions -- but I was disappointed to learn that their very narrow hypothesis was inconsistent with the NAS report and was not likely to provide useful information. They preferred investigating the singular effects of fat on breast cancer while mostly ignoring the much more promising effects of a diet replete with fruits, vegetables and whole grain products that was naturally low in fat. It was my view that this was too narrow and not likely to be useful.

This narrow focus on fat reflected a sense of simplicity that was inconsistent with the underlying biology. At about the same time these studies were being organized, a similar approach to control cancer was being vigorously pursued by others who hoped to develop and market supplements of individual nutrients, a market that ultimately became exceptionally lucrative. Both of these strategies have now been proven to be ineffective.

These were hypotheses of gimmickry that reflected huge market forces at play. Modestly decreasing fat from certain well-entrenched foods allowed their continued marketing. Popping a few nutrient pills or adding dietary fiber to foods created new market opportunities.

This gimmickry primarily arose from an intense aversion to the evidence showing that it was the imbalanced consumption of animal and plant based foods that mattered most. There was a strong tendency to ignore this evidence, both within our NAS committee and by the investigators who were organizing these large human studies on breast cancer. Our committee, for example, decided on the arbitrary and practical target of 30% fat because a lower level, which was supported by the evidence, would have implied decreased consumption of meat, milk and eggs that might cause public rebuke of the entire report.

The available evidence for our NAS committee showed that the association of dietary fat with breast and other cancers was attributed to the consumption of animal protein, reflecting excessive consumption of animal based foods, perhaps also inadequate consumption of plant based foods. Laboratory evidence, including our own, also was showing that consuming animal protein had multiple adverse health effects. It could markedly increase cancer development, elevate blood cholesterol and atherosclerotic plaque and induce loss of calcium needed for strong bones. But all of this evidence was minimized and ignored, and continues even today. This also was a personal challenge for me. I was raised on a dairy farm milking cows, then started my research career at Cornell University attempting to promote more not less animal protein consumption.

This negation of the evidence has had serious consequences. For example, the vast majority of subjects in both of these recently reported studies used diets rich in animal protein, total fat and animal based foods, leaving virtually no opportunity to experimentally investigate the effects of a diet of whole plant based foods naturally low in fat. Women who consumed less fat, actually consumed more animal protein. Indeed, they were urged and coached to do this. At best, these women only made minor changes in fat consumption, leaving intact their imbalanced consumption of foods likely to make the most difference.

Now, using meager findings to make sweeping generalizations to dismiss the effect of diet on serious diseases like cancer only compounds the problem. Indeed it is deeply irresponsible for it denigrates some recent work from clinicians that, in fact, we are what we eat. Nothing in my 50 years in research is more promising than the brilliant work of Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD, of the Cleveland Clinic showing that a truly low fat, plant based diet is able to CURE heart disease, an effect that also is beginning to appear for other diseases as well.

Researchers need to be more attentive to the American taxpayer who foots the bill for their work, regardless where this research may proceed. Unfortunately, in the current climate, doing such research seems to be more about creating wealth for the few at the expense of the health of the many.

Editorial note: The above article is from the co-author of the NAS Report which prompted these dietary fat/cancer studies which have been so widely covered in the US media. Of interest is that this article was submitted to almost every major newspaper in the United States, and all rejected it. Outlets such as The New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and many others were uncomfortable printing this article which provides evidence that the real (and ignored) health story is that a plant-based diet is being shown to be the key to preventing or reversing serious disease, including cancer. Instead, each of these publications ran paid advertisements from the Dairy Council and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association in the same timeframe. When government research is owned by corporate interests, and the mainstream media is as well, it's hard to get much accurate information, be it information about political issues, about issues of war, or about issues of health.

Treating breast cancer with raw living foods - a survivor's story

by Mary Lou Sackett
January 26, 2005

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2003. I agreed to have the original incisional biopsy, which determined breast cancer, but without a clear margin. I then agreed to a second surgery to remove the lump and to have a sentinel node biopsy. I was told that I had stage 2 breast cancer. The doctors wanted me to have radiation and a mastectomy, or radiation and chemotherapy. I also was diagnosed with cancer cells on my cervix.

I am a chiropractor who has never agreed with the traditional medical approach, but wasn't sure what to do this time.

A friend of mine who I hadn't seen in about nine years showed up and told me that I needed wheatgrass and that I needed to go to the Creative Health Institute for help. I agreed to try it and went to CHI for two weeks in December 2003. I was still recovering from the second surgery when I arrived, and I also had a coffee addiction to conquer.

I graduated from the two-week program at CHI, went home for six weeks, then returned for three months to participate in the Energy Exchange program. I have followed the program taught at CHI nearly 100%.

I had no idea at first if this would help my breast cancer or how much it would change my life. Now, a year later, I would like to list the exciting "side effects" of my new lifestyle:

- shed excess fifty pounds easily!
- complexion has improved
- joint pains disappeared
- hair growing faster and improved color
- sleeping better
- went through menopause this year with NO symptoms!
- no longer have chest pains or shortness of breath when climbing stairs or walking
- feel calmer, more peaceful - no more constipation (was severe)
- no more cravings for coffee or sugar
- increased stamina
- no more phlegm problems
- skin tans more easily without burning (I'm fair skinned and normally burn easily)
- fibromyalgia-type symptoms gone (a year ago, I could barely walk because my feet hurt so badly)
- bees didn't bother me this summer! (I hope that continues!)
- latest pap smear showed only mild dysplasia. Each test has improved significantly. The doctor keeps saying to me that I need to keep doing whatever it is I'm doing.
- I don't feel "old" anymore
- and best of all, I had an AMAS cancer antibody test in August which was NORMAL.

Thank you CHI, Don, Jeanie and all the staff for supporting me and teaching me what I needed to restore the quality of my life! I am so grateful to my loving family and many friends who have also been very supportive of my efforts.
