Detox Diets: Juice Up Your Health? - Fasting and "Cleansing" Not Necessary, Some Experts Say

By Jeanie Lerche Davis

It's a compelling argument:

The very veggies we eat, the air we breathe, even our drinking water is full of toxins. So ridding the body of toxins is surely a good thing, right?

Not everyone agrees.

That's the premise of detoxification diets, better known as detox diets. For many people, detoxing is a ritual form of spring cleansing. However, while the theories behind detox diets may sound beneficial, they are controversial. Some experts say they're pointless, sometimes even dangerous.

"There's no scientific evidence to support the claims made for [detox diets],"says alternative-medicine guru Andrew Weil, MD, host of drweil.com and director of integrative medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson. "But there are things you can do to rev up the body's own elimination systems," he tells WebMD.

Spring Cleansing: No Vacuum Needed.

It's true that our bodies naturally eliminate toxins we ingest or inhale, explains Linda Page, ND, PhD, a naturopathic doctor, lecturer, and author of the book Detoxification.

"Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph glands, and skin.  "Just as our hearts beat nonstop and our lungs breathe continuously, so our metabolic processes continuously dispose of accumulated toxic matter," she explains. Page has her own theory as to why there is a need for detox diets. She tells WebMD the environmental toxins of modern-day life that we're exposed to the pollutants, chemicals, other synthetic substances are more than the average body can handle.

"The body doesn't know what to do with foreign substances, so it will store them outside of the regular elimination system, so we don't get poisoned. Those poisons start building up in our body fat. Her weekend detox program involves drinking fruit juice, a whole lot of juice and little else, which, according to her, pushes these toxins out of your system." Page says.

She also recommends taking "cleansing boosters" such as herbal laxatives and colonics, as well as probiotics (that replenish healthy bacteria} and antioxidants during the weekend program. Relaxation techniques, massage therapy, sauna, aromatherapy baths, deep breathing exercises, walking, help round out the cleansing, she says.

Vegetarian Eating and Fasting:

Richard DeAndrea, MD, ND, has developed a 21-day detox program. During the first week, you follow a strict plant-based vegan diet, no meat, no dairy. The second week is raw fruits and vegetables only. The third week, you're drinking fruit juices and special smoothies some call "green sludge." According to his web site, the smoothies contain a "superfood" supplement specially blended for detoxification -- pulverized alfalfa, barley grass, algae, herbs, enzymes, and antioxidants.

But for purists like Chris Strychacz, PhD, a research psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, fasting ("water only") is the way to go. He's been fasting for at least 25 years now, an annual week-long ritual every spring.

Although there are no studies of juice-fasts diets, water fasting does have some scientific evidence behind it, "but very scant," he admits.

The Benefit:

For some people, a detox diet might be a first step toward healthier eating, says Cindy Moore, MS, RD,
Director of Nutrition Therapy at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and a spokeswoman for the
American Dietetic Association.

"If it means someone has decided to eat a vegetarian diet, the benefit may be that they're consuming more fruits and vegetables than they usually do, more plant-based foods," Moore tells WebMD. "But I wouldn't consider that to be detoxification."

The Problems:

It's true that pesticides are stored in body fat. "But there's no evidence that a detox regimen, which works on the GI [gastrointestinal] tract, is going to do anything to get rid of those stored pesticides," says Chris Rosenbloom, PhD, RD, associate dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences and Professor of Nutrition at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

A healthy body needs no help ridding itself of toxins, Rosenbloom tells WebMD. "There's no reason to do any kind of detoxification. The toxins don't need to be forced out by some kind of fasting or laxative or enema regimen." In fact, some measures, such as colonics, "can actually be dangerous, because you're introducing something foreign into your body that could cause infection or perforation of your bowel", says Rosenbloom.

Also, detox diets aren't a great way to lose weight, she explains. "All you lose is water weight." Stay on the diet too long, and you could lose muscle mass rather than fat, which will slow your metabolism. That translates into no weight loss at all, she says.

Weil's Words of Advice:

Forget detox diets, says Weil. "The best thing you can do is to stop putting toxins into your system.
Eat organic foods, drink water that is purified, don't be around second-hand smoke, the obvious things."

- [The detoxification part of the Dr. Ann Wigmore program definitely worked for me. Not only did I take off 30 lbs. in the first month, I've lost 90 lbs. over the last 6 years, and my weight has stayed steady at 170 lbs. since then. I, for one, have seen the benefits of a detox diet first-hand. - Jim Carey]

Detoxification

Detoxification...the Word for the Day
by KK Fowlkes of www.wheatgrasskits.com

Detoxification seems to be the word for the day. Never at a time in the history of man, have the foods we eat been so processed and devitalized. Never has there been the chemical pollution in the growing soils, in the ground water, the rivers and the oceans and in the air. The shampoos, lotions, creams, and emollients we slather upon our bodies have chemical names we've never heard of. Never before have people suffered en masse from such a wide variety of illnesses and disease. It is reported that of the 60 million people who search the internet every day, 20 million are searching for something to do to improve their health and immune systems.

"In a study led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in collaboration with the Environmental Working Group and Commonweal, researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 91 industrial compounds, pollutants, and other chemicals in the blood and urine of nine volunteers (one of which was Bill Moyers) with a total of 167 chemicals found in the group. Like most of us, the people tested do not work with chemicals on the job and do not live near an industrial facility. "Scientists refer to this contamination as a person's body burden.  Of the 167 chemicals found, 76 cause cancer in humans or animals, 94 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 79 cause birth defects or abnormal development.  The dangers of exposure to these chemicals-in-combination have not been studied".

One can access the website at http://www.ewg.org/reports/bodyburden/es.php

Body burden = lethargy or laziness? It is good to know that no one is truly lazy!  Body chemistry keeps many people in life from being super-successful. Body chemistry contributes to lethargy, slow mentality, chronic fatigue, disease, old age, and eventually death.
So what does it mean to detoxify? Literally it means to clean house. Enabling the body to cleanse itself of toxins means to vitalize the cells of the body so that each cell will have enough energy to empty the garbage so to speak. In other words to rid itself of toxins and in so doing, changing the environment or the body chemistry.

Why don't the cells of our bodies have energy to rid themselves of toxins?  As Ann Wigmore has said, and many before her:  a devitalized lifeless cooked food diet.

Arnold Ehret (Mucusless Diet Healing System) another raw food pioneer who lived long before Ann Wigmore, said that in order to be healthy, we must eat mucus-less food...or a diet that doesn't cause our bodies to make mucus to protect itself.  If one eats a diet which causes the chemistry of the body to be acid, then the cells of the body will make mucus to protect them.  Over a lifetime, this mucus will do many things.  It will be a home for
viruses, it will continue to multiply as the body gets more and more acid, it will harden in some places and impede circulation.  The acid will also cause the body to hold on to water (weight) in order to neutralize.

So...what about the acid alkaline balance?  According to natural health school online, http://www.naturalhealthschool.com/acid-alkaline.html over-acidity which can become a dangerous condition that weakens all body systems, is very common today.  It gives rise to an internal environment conducive to disease, as opposed to a pH-balanced environment which allows normal body function necessary for the body to resist disease.  A healthy body maintains adequate alkaline reserves to meet emergency demands.  When excess acids must be neutralized, our alkaline reserves are depleted leaving the body in a weakened condition."

To adequately understand the acid alkaline balance and the fluids that bathe the cells of the body, think about the experiment performed in the 1930's by Dr. Alexis Carrel, a two-time Nobel Prize winning scientist who performed the first kidney transplant, and was head of the Rockefeller Research Institute.  Under his direction a small piece of heart tissue from an embryonic chicken was cultured in a flask.  It was provided with nutrients, oxygen and water.  The piece of chicken heart was kept growing for more than 30 years, far past the life span of a normal chicken.  After 34 years, it showed no signs of deterioration.  So, the caretakers stopped caring for it and let it die.  Carrel concluded that our cells could live and reproduce forever provided proper conditions are maintained.

Dr. Carrel wrote about the experiment in 1935: "When the composition of the [fluid around the cells] is maintained constant [with oxygen, nutrients, etc.], the cell colonies remain indefinitely in the same state of activity.  They never grow old.  Colonies obtained from a heart fragment removed in January 1912, from a chick embryo, are growing as actively today as 23 years ago.  In fact, they are immortal."  Alexis Carrel, Man the Unknown, New York: Halcyon House, 1938, p. 173.

Theodore A. Baroody, N.D., D.C., Ph.D. in his book, Alkalize or Die, said, "The countless names of illnesses do not really matter.  What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause...too much tissue acid waste in the body!"

A healthy pH body range is 6.0 to 7.5.  One can purchase inexpensive pH strips at the local pharmacy and test both the saliva and the urine.  If the urinary pH fluctuates between 6.0 to 6.5 in the morning and between 6.5 and 7.0 in the evening, the body is functioning within a healthy range.  (Test one hour before a meal and two hours after a meal.)

"When the pH is unbalanced, the condition forces the body to borrow minerals - including calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium - from the vital organs and bones and to buffer or neutralize the acid and safely remove it from the body.  This strain can cause prolonged damage to the body.  Mild acidosis can cause such problems as cardiovascular damage, weight gain, obesity, diabetes, bladder and kidney problems, kidney stones, immune deficiency, premature aging, osteoporosis, joint pain, aching muscles, lactic acid buildup, low energy, and chronic fatigue."

If acid levels are too high, the body will not be able to excrete acid.  It must either store the acid in body tissue (autotoxication) or buffer it -  by borrowing minerals from organs and bones in order to neutralize acidity.

So...what is the solution?  One can gradually begin to de-acidify the body and make it more alkaline!  It is as simple as changing the diet.  Knowing and eliminating the foods that cause the body to be acidic is important:  Animal foods such as beef, turkey, chicken, shellfish, pork, fish, eggs, butter, milk, ice cream, cheese, and things like chocolate, carbonated drinks, white sugar, white flour, unsprouted nuts such as peanuts, walnuts, pecans, cashews, etc. (A complete list can be found on the above mentioned website.)

Very important!  Involves adding the foods that cause the body to be alkaline:  fresh fruits, and vegetables in the raw state, sprouted nuts and seeds of all kinds the greens such as parsley, spinach and the lettuces and also including wheatgrass juice, barleygrass juice, fruit and vegetable juices.

Once again, the Ann Wigmore diet proves to be healthful for a set of entirely different scientific reasons!

Skin Brushing

"One of the best ways to cleanse the entire lymphatic system is by brushing the surface of the body with a soft dry brush made of natural vegetable bristles.

The traditional Chinese version of this method uses the dried fibers of a ground fruit called 'silk squash', known as loofah in the West, but natural-bristle brushes have proven to be far more effective. The brush should have a long handle, soft natural bristles, and always be kept dry.

Dry skin brushing stimulates the lymph canals to drain toxic mucoid matter into the colon, thereby purifying the entire lymphatic system.

This enables lymph to perform its house-cleaning duties by keeping the blood and other vital tissues detoxified.

Most people today today have chronically toxic lymph fluids and swollen lymph nodes [Jos-hua's were swollen for 7 years! An Iridologist told him that his lymphatic system was virtually on the brink of collapse. Two years of cleansing totally healed his lymph.], a condition which promotes toxicity throughout the system by robbing lymph of its power to clean the blood and cellular fluids.

In addition, skin brushing is highly stimulating to surface circulation of blood and leaves you feeling invigorated.

Skin brushing need be performed only once a day, preferably first thing in the morning, and it takes only a couple of minutes.

If you're feeling sluggish, toxic, or ill, you may want to do it twice a day.

The body should be dry and naked, and the brush should be swept once or twice in the same direction, across every surface of the body except the face.

Do not scrub, massage, or rotate the brush on the body; just sweep it across the skin in long smooth strokes in the direction of the colon.

Brush up the arms from hands to shoulders, up the legs from feet to hips, down the back and torso, up the buttocks, down the neck, and across the shoulders.

After a few days, you may notice a gelatinous mucoid material in your stools; that's toxic lymph which has drained into your colon owing to skin brushing."

For a thorough lymphatic cleansing, perform skin brushing daily for about three months during and after your HPS 7 Day Wonder cleansing program.

Dry Skin Brushing

Renata on Raw

In the last newsletter I mentioned how the skin helps to eliminate toxins from the body. The skin is actually the largest elimination organ of the body. On average it weighs about 9 pounds.

Considering the skin’s importance we can give it a little help to make its life easier and its appearance radiant and healthy with hardly any financial expenditure. It takes only a simple natural brush and a mere few minutes a day to brush your skin towards the exuberant glow. By removing the dead skin cells, you will facilitate the opening of the pores for an easy exit of the toxins such as uric acid crystals.

Be gentle with yourself in the beginning, you have the rest of your life to practice this detox regimen. Start at the bottom of your feet, proceed to the legs, arms (lift them) and brush towards your colon in a circular fashion. Back, abdomen and chest need your loving attention as well. The women want to brush around their breasts. The procedure takes about 2 -5 minutes and will highly increase the efficiency of your lymphatic system.

If you ever had a lymphatic drainage massage you know how good you felt afterwards. If not, you might just want to make an appointment with your massage therapist and experience the lightness after such an treatment.

Every skin brushing needs to be followed up with a shower to clean away the debris. Natural soaps are the best. Please avoid those fancy shower gels, shampoos and whatnot. Have you read the labels lately? Chemical concoctions at their best. My motto is: If I can’t pronounce it I don’t want it on my skin or to ingest it.

The skin is a two-way road. What you put on your skin gets into your body. Likewise, what is in your body comes out via the skin. I am really careful with skin care products. Often, the best skin care products are right in your raw kitchen such as an avocado, coconut oil or the moist skin of a peeled cucumber.

Avocado helps to ease dry skin on your heels, organic coconut oil gives your whole body a luxurious, tropical richness, and the peeled cucumber skin feels cooling on your face, especially for us in the south experiencing the 100 degree heat.

Watermelon – The Economical Cleansing Agent

Renata on Raw

Last Saturday we did grocery shopping at the local farmers’ market. It was a very small farmers’ market. One stand, to be exact. Mind you, we live in rural Georgia. But what a find we got. A real watermelon, with seeds and all. I don’t know how they get watermelon without seeds, and I really don’t care to know. But what a difference in taste and color compared to the seedless version. And the size of the melon, as heavy as two bowling balls combined. And all for $4! So, this watermelon turned out to become a watermelon bomb of concentrated nutrients.

Dr. Ann Wigmore states in her book, Be Your Own Doctor, “The watermelon rind has the richest proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Vitamins A, B, and C are found in the rind, along with their respective enzymes and other elements. Melons aid in the elimination of uric acid, and are beneficial to the urinary tract, bladder and kidney.

“The ‘water of life’ is found in abundance in watermelons, and they will prove to be the safest means of cleaning the body’s waste, while at the same time providing nourishment. Watermelon is a wonderful aid for the person with an acid condition, as it helps balance the body to becoming more alkaline.”

So, why spend your money on vitamin pills and other concoctions for cleansing your body if you can have the detox elixir via the delicious watermelon juice? The juice is so refreshing, sweet (you might want to add some water if your body reacts to concentrated sugar) and soooo tasty, it is the REAL THING, for pennies to a glass.

Once in a while I drink only watermelon juice for a few days. It does wonders to my skin, to my overall well-being and to my grocery budget as well.

However, if this does not inspire you to go out and get a watermelon, you might want to see what else you can do with a watermelon: click at the link to check out watermelon art, amazing - www.rawbc.org/articles/watermelon_art.html.

One-week dairy challenge

Cowrear CHALLENGE:  CONSUME NO MILK OR DAIRY PRODUCTS FOR JUST ONE WEEK. NO ICE CREAM. NO PIZZA. NO CHEESE. NO YOGURT.

READ LABELS. IF YOU SEE “SODIUM CASEINATE” OR “WHEY”, SAY “NO WAY!”

If you are the typical American who eats 29.2 ounces per day of milk and dairy products (666 pounds per year), during your one-week experiment, you should expel four quarts (1 gallon) of mucous from your body. An internal “fog” will lift from your system. You’ll sleep better, exercise better, have greater lung capacity, and you might even recapture your youth. You’ll even be tempted to throw away your antacids, antihistamines, and other pills made unnecessary by your new discovery, NOTMILK!

On day eight, eat pizza for dinner and have ice cream for dessert, and your internal “sludge” will return in about 12 hours. That will be the most convincing moment of truth for you. My prediction: You’ll forever give up all milk and dairy products.

Find a healer who has taken courses in nutrition in medical school. Many physicians have not. Find an alternative practitioner who recognizes the age-old wisdom that you are what you eat. I wish you the best of health.

The damage this polluted world does to your body

A reporter tested his body for chemicals he accumulated over his lifetime, and found the results disturbing: http://www.mercola.com/2006/oct/10/the-damage-this-polluted-world-does-to-your-body.htm and http://www3.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0610/feature4/index.html.

Phytonutrients and Wheatgrass

What are Phytonutrients:

Phytonutrients are the active components found in the skins of fruits, vegetables, grains, and seeds that are responsible for pigment, taste and smell. Unlike the traditional nutrients found in protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals, phytonutrients are not "essential" for life; however, they have been shown to be powerful antioxidants that work to promote overall health.

There are over 25,000 different phytonutrients that have been identified in fruits and vegetables. Those foods rich in phytonutrients include tomatoes, green tea, carrots, broccoli, wheatgrass and chlorella. To function at optimal health, the human body needs a wide variety of phytonutrients from a variety of sources. The best way to reap the benefits of phytonutrients is to eat natural, whole foods.

What is Wheatgrass:

The wheatgrass that is certified organic produces high concentrations of chlorophyll, enzymes and vitamins. The wheatgrass seed begins its journey absorbing natural nutrients from a soil prepared using organic methods containing NO genetically engineered products, in preparation to become a tall, fruitful plant. At this stage, the plant has the nutrient profile similar to that of other leafy green vegetables and will continue to grow until these nutrients reach their peak levels, at about three inches in length. Organic wheatgrass contains vitamins A, B complex, C and E, trace elements calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium, enzymes and amino acids. As an antioxidant, organic wheat grass can boost the immune system and scavenge free radicals. Organic wheatgrass has been shown to be a powerful body detoxifier. Its high chlorophyll content cleanses the liver, tissues and cells and purifies the blood. Organic wheatgrass also contains folic acid, iron, and vitamin B-12 which are required for proper red blood cell production.

What is Chlorophyll:

Chlorophyll is the green pigment molecule in plants and is responsible for absorbing the sun's energy for photosynthesis.. Interestingly, the chlorophyll molecule in plants is chemically similar to hemoglobin in human blood. The only difference in the two molecules is that the central atom in chlorophyll is magnesium, whereas in humans it is iron. As a food supplement, chlorophyll can detoxify and purify the blood and liver, help build red blood cells and aid in tissue repair.

What are the other ingredients:

Vitamin A (as Natural Beta Carotene) for improved eye health and to guard against infection;
Vitamin B-2 (Riboflavin) to aid in the release of energy from foods and promote normal growth and development;
Vitamin C to guard against cardiovascular disease, boost immunity, aid in wound healing, help form collagen in connective tissues;
Vitamin D to maintain blood levels of calcium and promote its absorption;
Vitamin K for proper bone and blood function;
Calcium for strong bones and teeth, efficient blood clotting, nerve cell transmission and health muscle contractions;
Potassium for proper electrolyte and fluid balance;
Iron for stimulation of the bone marrow production of hemoglobin (red-blood cell that carries oxygen to other cells)

What is detoxification:

After a period of time, the body builds up toxins and natural waste products from chemicals, pollution and overindulging. A process of cleansing the internal system, or detoxifying, helps rid the body of harmful chemicals that may be contributing to fatigue, illness, pain, and poor digestion. Cleansing can be achieved through various modalities, including fasting, diet, saunas, and a range of whole foods vitamins, herbs, and nutrients.

What does Wheatgrass do for me:

Organic wheat grass detoxifies and oxygenates the blood thereby increasing circulation, energy levels, immune system function and an overall sense of well being from good nourishment. Wheat grass and chlorophyll are phytonutrients rich in amino acids, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, enzymes that work together to strengthen immunity.

Why do I need Wheatgrass:

Organic wheatgrass, rich in chlorophyll, enzymes, vitamins and nutrients has been linked to improved health. Some of the benefits of wheatgrass include:
Increase of hemoglobin production;
Rebuilding of the blood stream;
Purifying the blood;
Improving the body's ability to heal wounds;
Neutralizing toxins and carcinogens in the body;
Helping to purify the liver;
Improving digestion;
Removing heavy metals from the body.

Toxic overloads in your body

The human body is an amazing thing. In its healthiest state it has the ability to keep itself clean and relatively poison-free. In this sense, detoxification is the body’s natural process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins. This happens via the liver, kidneys, and lungs, as well as in urine, feces, and through sweat. Yet, your body can become so overloaded that its natural detoxification system can’t keep up, and when this happens the toxins build up and can affect virtually all of the systems of the body, head to toe: http://www.naturalhealingtoday.com/article_001.html.

Fasting and detoxifying the body

For some, the word "fasting" translates into a form of suffering and lack. For Shay Arave this was not too far off the mark when she ventured into the experience. Her first insight for anyone considering a fast is to read up on the subject.

Fasting is not just about not eating, but about de-toxing and cleansing the body through resting the digestive system. When our magnificent body is not busy digesting our daily intake of food, it has time on its hands. That time is put to use by directing energy towards flushing our system of built up refuse accumulated over the years - debris not used or wanted by our bodies.
