Sweetness versus Glycemic Index

You know carbohydrates can be fattening. But, contrary to what most of my patients have been told, the risks versus healthy benefits of carb foods are not related to their sweetness.

Many carbohydrates spike your blood sugar and stimulate your body to produce insulin. This insulin then causes you to build and store fat. Do it for long enough and this will make you fat and tired. It will also lead to other health problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. So how can you tell the difference between carbs that spike insulin and those that are less harmful?

You'll see, it's not sweetness that makes the difference. You can use a simple system based on the glycemic index. You can eat certain foods that taste sweet and avoid the real insulin producers.

* Sweetness versus Glycemic Index *

Just because it tastes sweet doesn't mean that it will spike your blood sugar. That is a concept that many of my patients have a hard time accepting at first. But it makes sense when you look at it in terms of the glycemic index. The glycemic index is a rank of how carbohydrates in different foods affect blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates that breakdown the quickest have the highest glycemic indexes. The index is in percentage terms. It is a comparison to pure glucose. For example, a food with a glycemic index of 50% will cause half of the rapid rise in blood sugar that glucose would.

Spiking your blood sugar can cause your body to store extra fat related to your insulin response. The higher the glycemic index of the food you eat, the more fat youll make from it even if it has an equal number of calories.

Glycemic Index Scale

Low Glycemic Index: 0-55
Medium Glycemic Index: 56-69
High Glycemic Index: 70 and up

Glycemic Index of Common Foods1

Low  (0-55)                    Medium (56-69)              High (70 or more)

Eggs                            Meat                            Apple
Orange                          Pear                              Baked beans
Milk                               Berries                         Bananas
Carrots                          Yams                            Ice Cream
White rice                      SodaPound cake           Rice cakes
Waffle                            Breakfast cereal            Bread (white and whole wheat)
Sports Drinks                Bagel

Notice that most fruit and berries fall in the low glycemic group despite tasting quite sweet. Notice man-made starches like cereals and breads have the very highest glycemic indexes even though they are not sweet. This is a difficult message to get across. We are inundated with ads for starchy cereals touting them as healthy. Some sources including our government are still clinging to the disastrously poor advice of recommending multiple servings of starchy grains every day.

Think of it like this: the starchier the food, the more likely it is to have a high glycemic index. So this would tell you that foods like potatoes, spaghetti, and corn are all high on the glycemic index. Conversely, foods that are naturally sweet but not starchy like berries and most fresh fruit are likely to have low glycemic indexes. In other words fruit is not nearly as fattening as breads, pastas, cereals, potatoes and corn.

* Forget Cereal *

There are many good reasons to try to keep low glycemic foods in your diet. Foods low on the glycemic scale:

Will help you to feel fuller longer
Cause a smaller rise in blood sugar
Can improve insulin sensitivity
Can inhibit fat storage
May increase your endurance (the fuel doesnt burn up so quickly)

There is a good database for the glycemic index of foods on the Internet at
www.glycemicindex.com. Just type in the food and you will see its glycemic rating.
In short, stay away from foods that are starchy, made from grains, or have been artificially sweetened. The more you reduce these foods that are high on the glycemic index, the better youll feel.

On the other hand sweetness is not a necessarily a problem. If a food is naturally sweet and you like it, eat it. When given natural choices, your sweet tooth will serve you well.

To Your Good Health,
Al Sears, M.D.

Dr. Flora on Diabetes and Fibromyalgia

[Dr. Flora van Orden III was Dr. Ann Wigmore's personal assistant for over 20 years, and we consider her a prime source for advice on Dr. Ann's teachings. The following letters are dialogs between Dr. Flora and newsletter readers. There's a lot of good info here for everyone. Reprinted with permission. - James.]

Hi Jim,

Wonderful newsletter and information. I hope to visit you next summer.

I am Diabetic and have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia recently. I am scheduled to go to a local Pain Clinic tomorrow for injections.

I have been eating well and exercising, but am still in a lot of physical pain. Is there anything you know of that will work more directly on my pain? I will keep researching, but just thought I would ask.

Thanks,
Doug
---------------------------------

I'm passing your query on to Dr. Flora, who's more qualified to respond to it.

I can tell you this - diabetes and fibromyalgia respond wonderfully to raw living foods.

Fibromyalgia is considered by Dr. Hulda Clark in her book "The Cure for All Diseases". Please read it.

Here is a small part of the teleconference tonight.

ChinastudyDr. T. Colin Campbell: 7/18/07:  Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University, who has published The China Study concerning the Chinese lack of cancers because they don't use dairy in many places. "I started out wanting to learn more about how to get higher levels of protein from animals. Then, I saw children under the age of 4 coming up with liver cancer and wanted to know why. In India, rats being experimented on for the same kind of cancers, came up with that cancer with increased intake of animal protein. Then I went to VA tech for 27 years to find the answer to the question “Was it really true that extra protein intake would turn on this type of cancer?” The animals were exposed to chemical carcinogens. Could it have been that? When fed an amount of protein in excess than what is needed for good nutrition, cancer followed. Nutrition had a dramatic effect on cancer. When higher levels of protein were fed, cancers were turned on.

Principles - The major discovery was that we could turn on cancer by feeding milk protein. The effect of cow's milk protein on initiating cancer was greater than any other kind of protein's effect, even though there were multiple mechanisms that turned it on. It was a question of plant-based protein turning cancer off. Animal protein turning cancer on.

We were involved in a large nationwide survey in the People's Republic of China. For about a dozen different kinds of cancers, the people were consuming too much protein. Lower protein intake, less cancer. We explored all manner of diseases. We explored dietary introduction of relatively small amounts of animal protein and found that it would increase heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Plant based diets - vegetables, fruits, whole grain foods - really reversed heart disease. I can't overemphasize how important a plant based diet is. For our health, use whole vegetables. Don't add salt, sugar, and fat. The closer we get to a plant based diet, the healthier we get. Health care calls are rising, mental health costs are rising. We need to promote the use of a plant based diet.

The Chinese caloric intake is high, but many generally don't eat any animal protein.

There was a question about the chemistry of animal protein. Its sulfate makes the ph of the body too acid. John MacDougall knows about this more than I. We don't need fish. Comment of listener: Dr. Mercola indicated that “EPA/DHA conversion is only made with fish oil, not with plants.” Fish have no antioxidants. No fiber. It's better to use flax seed, walnuts.

What about controlling gene expression? “I am not in support of individual nutrient supplements. I think they are a bit of a hoax”. TCC1@cornell.edu

One Soda a Day Increases Diabetes Risk 85 Percent

From Dr. Mercola:

SodadrinkerWomen who drink more than one can of sugar-filled soda a day might be increasing their chances of developing diabetes along with gaining weight.

A study showed that women who drank the minimum of one soda each day could increase their likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes by 85 percent over the women who drank less than one can a day.

Along with increasing the risk for diabetes, the high sugar and calorie content contained in sodas were also found to compound the risk of developing other chronic diseases such as obesity. These findings led researchers to believe the sugar found in soda and energy drinks could result in an overabundance of energy, which could trigger obesity and the packing on of extra pounds.

The Growing Number of Diabetes Cases in America

In 2002, 18.2 million Americans were found to have diabetes

Diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States

The number of people with diabetes has almost doubled over the years of 1990 to 2002

Researchers stated that school officials are now taking actions against the growing childhood obesity problem by encouraging their students to drink beverages other than sugar-filled soft drinks.

Study shows Diet and Exercise equally important

Which works best in fighting the risk factors for diabetes - exercise or diet?

It's a toss up, according to a new study by a Saint Louis University researcher who is a member of a Washington University team of scientists examining whether a calorie-restrictive diet can extend people's lifespan.

"Both diet and exercise provide profound benefits to reduce the risk of diabetes. Both those who restrict calories and those who exercise benefit from weight loss," says Edward Weiss, Ph.D., lead author and assistant professor of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University's Doisy College of Health Sciences.

"We thought exercise probably would produce greater benefits. But both of these are providing beneficial health improvements." - http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-11/slu-lwa110706.php and American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Sleep connected to Diabetes

Sleeping for less than six hours or for more than nine hours each night is associated with an increased risk of diabetes and impaired blood sugar (glucose) tolerance by 2.5-fold: http://www.defeatdiabetes.org/Articles/sleep050505.htm.

Jason Wyrick cured type-2 diabetes with veggie diet

When I was in my teens, I was a thin kid, in good health, and very active.  I am still amazed that, ten years later, I found myself in a hospital in Austin, Texas, well over a hundred pounds overweight, being treated for an infection, and being told I was diabetic.  I was more than scared when I found out, I was ashamed.  I was under 30, diabetic, and looking at the prospect of having to take medication for the rest of my life.  More than ashamed, I was desperate...

Vegan diet reverses diabetes symptoms, study finds

People who ate a low-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their blood sugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet, researchers said on Thursday. They lowered their cholesterol more and ended up with better kidney function, according to the report published in Diabetes Care, a journal published by the American Diabetes Association.

Participants said the vegan diet was easier to follow than most because they did not measure portions or count calories.

Cancer-free due to raw living foods

Cancer Free!
a letter to CHI from Gloria Albu

A routine check-up in late January of this year resulted in the discovery of a lump at the base of my neck. A biopsy followed and I was diagnosed with cancer (adeno-carcinoma of unknown origin). The oncologist said I must start chemotherapy immediately so I would have 5 years instead of six months to live.

I absolutely refused his professional advice and went to work on myself. To start with I made Essiac tea and drank it every day, took Jordan Rubin's products and did a lot of praying! I knew I first needed to rid myself of the fear surrounding the dreaded C-word. From there I was in touch with many people, gladly accepting their prayer support. I thanked God in advance for answered prayer. I practiced visualization - like sending wheelbarrows, dump-trucks and empty box car trains throughout my body to pick up all the debris of dead cancer cells and removing them. I sent armies in to annihilate any remaining cancer cells. I talked to the cancer cells first and let them know they were not going to spread any more - they were done! I practiced hands-on prayer, employed the healing humming technique of the Australian aborigines. I practiced the energy system's healing technique of guided imagery developed by Carolyn Myss and Norm Shealy. I planned to have fun - gardening, spending time with my youngest grandchildren. I hung affirmations on pretty ribbons all over my house such as “I am made in the image and likeness of God therefore I am magnificent in every way.” I kept fresh flowers on my dining table.

I made plans to go to Hippocrates in West Palm Beach but when my cousin in Michigan heard of my plans she said, "Come to Michigan. I have a friend who went to CHI and is now cancer-free!" (Mary Lou, now CHI's secretary).

So, knowing that Holy Spirit had already worked out all the details, I soon arrived at CHI in the middle of April. By the 3rd day of the wheatgrass fast my blood sugar dropped so low I had to ask for fruit to balance out. I have been off all medications for diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol ever since!! Wow! After 17-18 years of prescriptions!

Last week I went to my family doctor for a follow-up and the CEA was about the same, so he said I must get started on chemotherapy right away so I could live 5 years instead of 6 months. So, reluctantly, I went to see the chemotherapist again, but at the same time I was so sure the cancer was gone. He tried his medical best to convince me I must get started on chemo immediately, so I could live another 5 years instead of 6 months (must be a standard remark) and to "stop taking herbs!" Medical professionals have a way of making one feel as if he/she is delusional - or that I was just a 70 year old silver-topped nut! He finally asked how I felt and I replied, "I believe in the power of prayer and have been building my immune system with wheatgrass and raw foods and was sure the cancer was gone!" So he suggested we take another CAT scan and see what the results were.

The technician gave me an infusion so the x-ray would be very clear. I had to wait through the weekend for the report on Monday.

While I was unloading the trunk of my car that weekend a magnificent peacock-blue and black butterfly circled around me twice, flitted away and returned. It circled me again and landed on the floor of the carport. As it posed there, facing me, it seemed to be blessing me by raising and lowering its wings slowly several times. I knew instantly this was a Divine messenger letting me know that everything was OK!

Monday I picked up the report and there was no evidence of any cancer! Confirmation by Medical Technology!!

Ain't God awesome!!

The CHI founder (Don) and staff are wonderful emissaries for our Creator's plan of healing the planet. Thank you, thank you! I learned so much.

I'll stay green and raw for the rest of my life!

Vegan diet reverses diabetes, study shows

(Reuters) - People who ate a low-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their blood sugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet, researchers said on Thursday.

Participants said the vegan diet was easier to follow because they did not measure portions or count calories.

"I hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs," Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060727/hl_nm/diet_dc_3.

Feedback - Aimee Perrin

Jim,

Great newsletter! Thanks for mentioning my diabetes research and potluck.

Your story is very inspiring. I wonder if you could share with me if you know of anyone who went to CHI who was a type 1 diabetic and was able to get completely off insulin?

Thanks so much,
Aimee Perrin

Diabetes epidemic has doubled in America

In the past 30 years, new cases of type 2 diabetes have doubled, with most diagnoses occurring in people who are obese, according to findings from the Framingham Offspring Study.

The study involved over 3,000 participants -- with an average age of 47 -- who enrolled in the Framingham study, free from diabetes, in the 1970s, '80s or '90s. They were then followed for eight-year periods to document the occurrence of diabetes: http://www.mercola.com/2006/jul/4/the_diabetes_epidemic_has_doubled_in_america.htm.

Antidepressant drugs that increase diabetes risk

Antidepressant drugs increase the risk of type 2 diabetes among those at high risk of the disease, a re-analysis of part of the large-scale Diabetes Prevention Program study found: http://www.mercola.com/2006/jun/29/dangerous_antidepressants_elevate_type_2_diabetes_risk.htm.

More conventional medical delusional nonsense about diabetes

A daily "polypill" for type 2 diabetics, which combines low-dose aspirin with drugs to lower cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar, could prevent 7.2 million deaths and disabilities from diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The ADA used a mathematical model called Archimedes to determine the effects of several interventions on diabetes. The polypill, for example, could reduce the risk of heart attack among diabetics by 50 percent, kidney failure by 21 percent and blindness and eye surgery by 33 percent, the model found: http://www.mercola.com/2006/jun/27/more_conventional_medical_delusional_nonsense_about_diabetes.htm.

Whole grains improve insulin sensitivity

Whole grains improve insulin sensitivity, according to a study appearing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Insulin sensitivity is a measure of the body’s efficiency in clearing sugar from the bloodstream. Individuals with better insulin sensitivity have reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

The Insulin Resistance and Atherosclerosis Study included 978 middle-aged adults with either normal or impaired glucose tolerance. Participants whose diets included the most whole-grain foods - dark breads (e.g., whole wheat, rye, pumpernickel), bran or granola cereals, and cooked cereals - had significantly better insulin sensitivity, compared to those who tended to skip these foods.

This effect of whole grains appears to come mostly from their fiber and magnesium. However, evidence suggests that the short-chain fatty acids produced as grains are digested also contribute to the effect. Here is the reference:

Nearly 21 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, and the number continues to climb

What's the fast track to joining the ranks? Weight gain, particularly around the middle. An expanding waistline -- 35 inches or greater for women, 40 and over for men -- is a red flag. What can you do? Get active for at least 30 minutes a day, and shun foods high in saturated fat, white flour, and sugar: http://www.realage.com/news_features/tip.aspx?v=2&cid=16788.
