The Cholesterol Controversy

(NewsTarget) The cholesterol controversy has been waged now for over five decades. Volumes of books, articles, and journals have been written on the subject of the role cholesterol and diet plays in the arterial disease process.

Since the 1950's the "Lipid Hypothesis," also known as the "Diet-Heart Idea", states that saturated fat and high cholesterol play a major role in the causation of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and gained increasing support from the majority of the medical and scientific communities.

But over the last two decades, with marked advances in science and technology, the most recent research into lipid chemistry and coronary pathology are revealing that the "lipid theory" or "diet-heart" hypothesis might not be as definitive as once thought as being the major cause of coronary heart disease.

In fact, much of the latest research that has been done on cholesterol shows just how vital a role this group of fats, called sterols, really are to every cell, nerve, and major organ of the body.

Floss Teeth, Improve Brain

I don't know about you, but I'd almost rather go to a hanging than floss my teeth. I really hate jabbing that length of stringy floss between my choppers and gums.

I do it at least once a day, because I know it's a good thing to do, but I sure don't like it.

Well, here's a good reason to stay motivated with daily flossing. According to Michael Roizen, M.D., physician and author of Real Age: Are You as Young as You Can Be?, folks with periodontal disease (which often strikes when one doesn't clean between the teeth and gums) have an increased risk of developing fatty plaque in their blood vessels.

And of course squinched up blood vessels decrease the flow of blood to the ole brain, which can then impair memory.

Floss those teeth every day and perhaps your memory will improve to the point where you'll recall your first date. God forbid if it was anything like my first date. But that's another story.

Take a Whiz and Cure Fungalized Feet

Anyone who reads my health writings knows I have an overly-developed sense of humor, so let me preface today's health tip by saying that I'm not joking with what you're about to read.

With that said, I've been researching some natural foot fungus remedies lately. Well, the other day, a new suggestion came in from a friend of mine, a licensed pharmacist whose avocation lies with helping his clients by referring them whenever possible to natural solutions rather than to strong drugs.

He doesn't make as much money this way, of course, but he helps more people and makes a lot of friends, and that's what it's all about anyway, near as I can tell. Okay, here's what my buddy told me in his letter:

"Hey, Chet, between you, me, and the printer cable, the fastest and cheapest and most effective way to go after good ole foot fungus... your own urine. I know peeing on your feet in the shower sounds whacked, but I have used it effectively and passed it out dozens of times from behind the Prozac counter. And with a host of positive feedback."

Well, I was glad to get this fascinating suggestion from my friend because I've always been interested in urine. I mean, seriously, with so much of it coming out of us every day, how can we not be?

Although I don't have space to write an epistle on this, I do want to say that, contrary to the bad press it gets, human urine is sterile and not something filthy that we should cringe about when we mention its name.

I mean seriously, my pharmacist friend and I aren't recommending that you drink the stuff, though people in India have been doing just that for thousands of years for apparently good reasons. But that's another story.

Anyway, if you have a nasty case of foot fungus and want to try the easiest and least expensive home remedy I'm currently aware of, pour or pee some of your own urine on the problem in the shower, let it set for a minute or two, and then wash it off. Repeat as necessary whenever you shower until the problem heals.

By the way, after reading this tip, Linda S wrote, "There is another less offensive remedy. For real. Soak a cup of corn meal in warm to very warm water for about an hour, then soak the affected area in the 'meal water.' This can be done while watching you favorite tv show in the evening. Repeat as necessary. Supposedly, two to three times in a week should do the trick."

[ Another suggestion - Take Off Your Shoes - When I was living on Maui last winter I became accustomed to going barefoot almost all the time. When I did put something on my feet it was only sandals (slippahs, in Hawaiian terms). I brought that behavior pattern home with me.

Not only have my athlete's foot issues disappeared, but also my toenail fungus and fallen arches. My posture changed, too - for the better. My feet are larger now - none of my old shoes fit - but I feel so much better that I don't care.

There's a spiritual aspect to this, also. I feel much closer to the Earth now. Gardeners talk about the communion they feel with the earth when gardening, and I'm experiencing the same thing - all the time. When I saw Wayne Dyer on PBS recently, barefoot, I laughed out loud. He feels the same thing; that means I might be unusual, but I'm not as crazy as my friends say I am. <g>

With the onset of cooler weather here in Georgia, US, I find myself wearing sandals more, but most days I can get barefoot and out in the woods for at least a couple of hours.

Lead Poisoning and Soldering

Hello my healthy friends!

Any of you know about foods to prevent lead  poisoning? Outside of the great book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing", I don't have any other info on that.

I recently  (September) gratefully took a job at a small electronics engineering and assembly  firm, and the "organic" solder we use is 2/3 tin, 1/3 lead. I thought, uh oh, toxic stuff that's  probably worse than Cool Whip or the other "junk" at the grocery store. Plus, besides the chilly weather I've had to ride my bike recently (in Kansas), and a couple culinary mistakes at Thanksgiving, I am normally in good health, but I have taken some stuffy-head, mucusy, respiratory junk that seems better than it was a week ago, but with most of the soldering I do at work being with this "organic solder," I'm wondering...... I just looked at the online MSDS, and it says "respiratory and possible reproductory risks," not to mention the problems that lead is famous for.

Any suggestions? I'm presently a full-time student in computer-aided drafting, (time is at a premium now) so this job, which pays $9/hr is a good thing, and "permanent  part time" instead of temporary. And a good-paying job outside of being a high-paid burger-flipper is always appreciated!  :)

There are no foods that will “prevent” wellness challenges from lead poisoning or other heavy metal poisoning. You have to remove the cause if you want to stay well. Sinusitis Tips

The sole of the foot carries the only acupuncture point which comes in actual direct contact with the Earth. It lives in the central antero-posterior axis just to the rear of the ball of the foot, in the small indentation found there.

This a Wood point on the Water channel. The condition of sinusitis involves variously, in its natural history, Earth, Metal and Water, sometimes when inflamed, Fire, and by a sort of axial energetics, Wood.

Here is how any intervention on the foot will be seen to heal some aspect of the condition:

Location of the sinuses at fault: frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, 'open' into the airway, which is ruled by Metal. Thus Metal [sinuses] is benefited because the point Kidney 1 on the sole of the foot, rules Water, and this in 5 elemental terms, is the Child of 'Metal'. In short, this is a condition of a Child benefiting the Mother.

If the sinusitis has watery discharge, the Mother Metal is not nourishing Water. A simple massage of the point will rectify that.

If the sinusitis has a greenish discharge, the Water is not nourishing Wood. Again a simple massage of the point will help that. The very effective Wood point lives in the angle formed by the metatarsals of the great and second toe at the proximal end.

If the sinusitis has a tinge of blood, the Water is sinking and Fire, it's natural foil, is rising. Again a simple massage of the point will help restrain that.

Somewhat off the point, folks these days rarely touch actual earth with their feet, because most of the times these are in shoes, often made of a dead animal's hide; or in slippers at home. As often the floor of the home is tile, wood, or carpeted, almost certainly with synthetic fiber.

When this happens over a long period of time, Water, at its very first point, loses the immediate memory of being poised on Earth.

Which is where Pathos enters, and Chaos is not far behind.

Get Some Sun, for Pete's Sake

If you're an American or a Canadian, you're probably deficient in sunlight.

Try this: strip off as much clothing as modesty or surrounding allows and then walk or sun bathe for 10-15 minutes.

Do not use sunscreen.

Breathe deeply and feel the air and the rays of the sun as they touch your body.

Almost everyone comes away from 10-15 minutes in the sun feeling a lot better.

Best done in the morning or late afternoon, especially if you are fair-skinned.

And, no, tanning beds do not serve as healthy substitutes.

Batteries need electricity to recharge. Our bodies need some sunlight each day to do the same thing.

Jellyfish Sting Remedy

I learned this one from a correspondent who asked to remain nameless.

Seems that he was digging the surf and the beach south of Pensacola not too long ago. Having a great ole time swimming and ducking waves and soaking in salt water.

Along comes a school of jellyfish and, kaboom, our friend suddenly finds himself attacked by the creepy critters. Whack, one sting on the arm.

Slice, another sting on the abdomen.

Then, horrors, he feels a jellyfish sliding up his leg, entering his loose swimsuit, and then, ouch, stinging him where no man wants to be stung!

He comes flying out of the water, yelling in pain, trying not to let his hands shoot into his swimming trunks because by now everyone on the beach thinks a swimmer has gone stark raving bonkers.

He runs up to the concession stand, hollering about jellyfish stings, when a kind onlooker, who's sitting at a picnic table under the open-air, shaded enclosure orders, "Come here."

Our friend limps over, and the Samaritan suddenly starts pouring beer on his stings.

Amazing! Quick relief from the painful stings.

"Any more?" the Samaritan inquires.

Our friend sheepishly points to his trunks, and the Samaritan hands him what's left of the can of beer.

Stepping into the restroom, our buddy pours the beer into his trunks and breathes a huge sigh of relief as the sting of the pain immediately lessens and then stops altogether.

This is a true story, and the beer remedy works for jellyfish stings. I don't know why it works, but it does.

So the next time you go to the beach, take a few beers along, even if you're a tee-totaler, like me.

Another reader, Herbert, wrote in, "Don't try the beer remedy on the Real Thing, meaning jellyfish in Australian waters. Vinegar is the recommended first aid here, though it is quite proper to use the beer in copious amounts as an internal complementary medicine."

There are almost as many insect bite home remedies as there are seeds in a pomegranate.

Here are a few of the more interesting ones I've read about lately.

  1. Soak the affected area with vinegar.
  2. Put a cotton bowl dipped in ammonia on the bite to draw out the stinger and reduce the pain and itch.
  3. Smash up a clove of garlic and place the poultice on the affected area.
  4. Spread some honey onto an old cloth. Place some ice cubes on top of the honey. Wrap up the cloth and place on affected area.
  5. Kill a rattlesnake and then eat some of the meat every day for the next week. (I don't recommend this one since monkeying with rattlesnakes is dangerous, but I included it anyway for any snake handlers out there reading today's health tip.)

Vegetarian diet will lessen E. coli threat

Studies have shown that when contaminated meat is recalled, only about half of it is actually recovered- the rest remains in grocery stores. You can protect yourself and your loved ones from E. coli, campylobacter, listeria, and other bacteria that live in the intestinal tracts and feces of animals by always leaving meat and other animal products at the grocery store. Most farmed animals are crammed into filthy sheds and slaughtered on killing floors that are contaminated with feces, vomit, and other bodily fluids. These unsanitary conditions have led to a rise in food borne bacteria.

Plant-based foods, on the other hand, don't normally harbor E. coli or other fecal bacteria. In fact, according to the USDA, 70 percent of food poisoning is caused by contaminated animal flesh. When fruits or vegetables do become contaminated with E. coli, it is because animal manure was used to fertilize crops or leaked into waterways. Can vegetarianism prevent bird flu?

Most doctors and public health practitioners have shied away from recommending vegetarianism as a way not only to curb the emergence of animal diseases that can spread to humans, but also for preventing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some types of cancers.

But the connections between meat and disease are certainly there. Increasingly, evidence suggests that the intensely crowded, extremely filthy factory farms that feed animals a toxic brew of antibiotics, hormones, and high-protein feed (which may also contain the ground-up bits of other animals) are at least partly responsible for some of the zoonoses we read about every day...our continued consumption of animals not only has moral implications, but is also “highly imprudent” when it comes to preventing pandemics.

Chosing Diet over Drugs

Kelly Caraway Chose diet over drugs after a heart attack

One afternoon, in September of 2006, about a month after I turned 58, I was overtaken by excruciating chest pain, nausea, and profuse sweating. I tried to “walk it off” for about two hours at home but finally decided to go to the emergency room. I was sure that if I could just get some pills that everything would be fine. I drove myself 40 miles to the nearest hospital, and the next thing I knew the staff was looking for a helicopter to airlift me to a hospital that treats heart attack victims. I remember thinking, “They must be mistaken, I could never have a heart attack, I’m a healthy man, and I have no history of heart disease or coronary artery disease in my immediate family.” Plus, I thought, heart attacks only happen to other people.

About six weeks after my heart attack I switched to a plant-based diet and cut out soft drinks, fruit drinks, and sweets. After being on the vegan diet, along with my medication, for about six weeks, my total cholesterol dropped from 195mg/dl to 80mg/dl, my LDL went down to 25mg/dl, and my triglycerides came down to 150mg/dl. But I kept on taking all my medications...

Television as a chemical basis for ADD

According to Daniel Reid, writing in the Tao of Health Sex and Longevity, the rays from a TV flicker erratically, causing uneven and irregular stimulation of the retina. “This choppy stimulus is transferred directly into the brain via the optic nerve, which in turn irritates the hypothalamus. In scientific experiments conducted in the US but ignored by both the government and the television industry, rats exposed to colour TV for six hours a day became hyperactive and extremely aggressive for about a week. Thereafter they suddenly became totally lethargic and stopped breeding entirely.”

Transgenictomato In effect their endocrine systems had been ‘burnt out;’ equally significant was the fact that during the experiment the TV screens were kept covered in thick black paper so that only the invisible rays came through. Thus the damage was done, not by the visible rays, but by the invisible radiation.

Some conclusions:
· Children learn to speak from their parents and parents don’t play or talk enough with their children when the TV is on.
· Background noise from TV or radio, confuses infants. In response they learn to ignore all noise and then they ignore speech.
· Children of two years or older should not be exposed to more than two hours of TV a day.
· Children of one year old or younger should not be exposed to television at all.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease - a book review

     After hearing him in person, I was delighted today to get my Earth Save News, July 2007 and read: "A groundbreaking program backed by the irrefutable results from Dr. Esselstyn's 20-year study proving changes in diet and nutrition can actually cure heart disease.

     Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. But, as Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former internationally known surgeon, researcher and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, explains in this book, it can be prevented, reversed, and even abolished.      Angiogram evidence: Angiograms taken of the participants in the study show a widening  of the coronary arteries, and thus a reversal of the disease.

     "But the research trial was clear and unequivocal with its results. Among 15,000 patients, 82 died taking Torcetrapib and 51 died taking a standard drug to lower cholesterol. Additionally, the Torcetrapib group experienced a greater number of cardiac events such as angina, heart failure, and a need for angioplasty. The independent monitoring group advised Pfizer to halt the trial and they complied. The unfathomable mysteries of human metabolism could not tolerate the assault of this drug. It was making vascular disease worse, not better.

     "The double whammy for cardiology also developed in the second half of 2006. Reports from Europe in September 2006 indicated that patients utilizing the new drug eluting stents were suddenly having heart attacks and some were dying. ...it was disturbing to cardiologists and remains frightening for patients.

     "When an artery to the heart is severely narrowed and causing symptoms cardiologists insert a balloon tipped catheter to the area of blockage and expand the balloon to widen the constriction. The benefit of this angioplasty is lost in 50% of patients because of recurrent constriction in 6 months. Placing a metal scaffold or stent improves the results to only 10-20% recurrent narrowing.

     "Starting in 2003, the stents were coated with a drug which diminished the rate of recurrent blockage after angioplasty. However, it is essential to maintain patients on an anti-clotting drug for 6-12 months to prevent the stent from developing a clot or thrombosis. It now appears that after stopping the anti-clotting drug, 1 in 200 or 0.5% (5,000 nationwide) and 10,000 persons worldwide will have a heart attack and 50% of these will die when the stent fails.

     "These results have so upset cardiologists and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) that a national conference was called in December 2006 to review this disturbing news. Watching intently and participating were the stent manufacturers Johnson and Johnson and Boston Scientific. Billions of dollars were at stake.

     "Following testimony, experts contend that for patients with uncomplicated disease, the benefits of the drug coated stents outweigh the risks. For patients with more advanced or complicated disease patterns, the outlook is less clear and more research data is required. What is clear is that everyone feels it may be necessary to prolong the period of requiring the anti-clotting drug Plavix from months to years or indefinitely.

     "However, Plavix is not without complications: it promotes bleeding, which may mean a gastrointestinal hemorrhage as well as easy bruising. The most desperate situations occur when a patient taking Plavix must stop it for dental work, hip or other major surgery and colonoscopy. Will they have a heart attack or die from a stent clot when Plavix is stopped? This scenario has occurred and is continuously encountered. It is as if a therapy for one disease now is painting patients into a corner from which they cannot escape when other illnesses require surgical therapy.

     "This Gordian knot has lead leading cardiologists to question stent therapy.

     "Dr. Eric Topol, a member of the conference panel stated, "There's a much more liberal use of angioplasty and stenting than there needs to be."

     "The head cardiologist at Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Calvin L. Weisberger added, 'A large pool of angioplasties and by-pass surgery are being done without scientific evidence.'

     "The hard science - which seems not to be prominent in all these discussions - is that it is not the major blockages which are treated by angioplasty and stents which account for heart attacks. The small unstable juvenile arterial plaques are prone to rupture and cause over 85% of heart attacks, and they are not treated by angioplasty or by-pass surgery. Then why do cardiologists treat the blockages unlikely to cause the heart attacks? There is a lingering belief that somehow the patient will be improved by widening the opening, and there is the unspoken force of money - huge guaranteed money from doing these procedures.

     "Then there is the harshest critic of all - scientific research. Study after study indicates for most patients undergoing angioplasties and stents, there is no increase in survival and no decrease in heart attacks.

     "Why might this be a time to rejoice? The morbidity, mortality, expense and transient benefits of a high technology approach toward the coronary disease epidemic has failed. It is time to realize that the answer to a faulty lifestyle epidemic is not drugs and technology - it is lifestyle.

     "The epidemiologic evidence that coronary artery disease does not exist in cultures consuming plant-based nutrition is robust and overwhelming. There is clear evidence that cultures which switch from a plant-based diet to a western diet develop an epidemic of coronary heart disease. Lewis Kuller, Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburg School of Public Health, based on his 10 year cardiovascular health study states: "all males 65 years of age or older who have been exposed to the traditional western diet have cardiovascular disease and should be treated as such."

     "This toxic diet with its burden of animal protein, dairy, processed oils, white flour products, sugar and excess saturated and trans fats and free radicals marinates in our bodies injuring our delicate cellular matrix with every bite at every meal. Science shows us how this occurs. We depend mightily on the capacity of our endothelial cells, which comprise the single cell layer lining our arteries, to manufacture nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is the strongest vasodilator in the body. (Dr. Flora interjects: watermelon and fresh papaya and home-ripened pineapple juice from outside the body going in do a fine job of vasodilating when the oxide is low until the body can catch up! Salt is a vasoconstrictor. Throw it away.) It causes blood vessels to enlarge, prevents blood flow from being sticky or sluggish, and inhibits arterial plaque formation.

     "The brachial artery tourniquet test quantifies the endothelial responses. The test requires an ultrasound measure of the diameter of the brachial artery below the elbow before and after an upper arm tourniquet stops blood flow to the forearm for 5 minutes. Normally, when the cuff is released and the brachial artery ultrasound measurement is repeated, the artery dilates or widens. This occurs from a healthy out-pouring of nitric oxide from the endothelium. When volunteers consume cornflakes, their brachial artery test is normal. If they consume sausage, olive oil, or saturated fat, they fail the test. The ingested fat so injures the endothelium that it cannot produce nitric oxide. Regular consumption of the toxic western menu is a cardiovascular disaster. The time is long overdue to challenge the failure of drugs and technology to stop the coronary disease epidemic.

     "The natural next question is can patients who have severe coronary artery disease arrest and reverse this disease by consuming a totally plant-based diet?

     "Dr. Dean Ornish (PCRM) and this author have investigated this question through scientific peer reviewed study. Dr. Ornish reported his results at one year and again at 5 years and most recently at 21 years in a book for the public Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, Avery/Penguin, February 2007.

     "These studies indicate that fully compliant patients decrease the episodes of angina or eliminate them, decrease their cholesterol, decrease their weight, increase their exercise capacity, and arrest and selectively reverse their disease on follow-up x-rays of the coronary arteries. Seeing these patients thrive beyond 20 years of initiating their plant-based therapy is the most powerful reason for wanting the cardiology community to embrace and utilize plant-based nutrition.

     "There is no morbidity, mortality or added expense with plant-based nutrition and benefits endure and improve with the passage of time. Cardiologists say they doubt that patients will follow such a nutritional change. My experience in counseling hundreds of these patients indicates this concern is flatly not true. As a matter of fact, patients rejoice in the knowledge that they have become the leader/locus of control over the disease that was destroying them and are distraught that they were never told of this option by their cardiologist.

     "In summary, the dark shadow cast over cardiology, through failure of its miracle drug and the melt-down of drug eluting stents with unforeseen clotting resulting in heart attacks and death should motivate us to look more closely at a proven therapy which is effective and endures and has the potential to eliminate the coronary heart disease epidemic, as well as other chronic western illness such as strokes, hypertension, adult onset diabetes, obesity, impotence and dementia."

I am sitting on the floor hysterical crying and ready to give up on life. I have MS for 6 years and just recently had a bad flare-up. My entire left side of my body from head to toe is numb and extremely weak. I also have numbness in my right hand but not as bad as my left. I was diagnosed in 2001 , presenting with dizziness and vertigo. I never went on the drugs and  went on a vegan diet . I did well for 5 years and then in '05 took a stressful job and started eating junk .

Stress is a mess on your body when you don't have rejuvelac and veggikraut, dulse and seed and nut cheeses to feed you the b-complex vitamins.

I had my second flare-up that year wich was severe optic nueritis in the right eye. Till this day it never cleared up. My left eye is fine but my right eye only has 20/400 vision. So I then tried a raw meat diet called the primal diet  because I thought that it would enhance my nerve re-building. The creator of this diet strongly advocates raw egg for the vitamin A /D content. I had a raw egg and here I am.... a mess... I am obviously allergic to eggs.

I don't know if you had an organic egg or not, but it's still animal protein which cultures bacteria, viruses and parasites, and I suggest strongly that you get a copy of Dr. Hulda Clark's book, "The Cure for All Diseases" to give you an idea of what's going on. She is moving closer to veganism every day, it seems, since that book was written. To me, the most awful and dangerous food you can eat for the rest of your life is dairy, in all forms: even a tiny bit of the casein (a protein) triggers an immune response that makes every part of your body respond in defense and just wears you out, dear.

You should be proud of yourself that you are searching and that God has chosen you to have such a strong body that you can overcome all of this pain and suffering if you just remember that pathogens grow in our bodies in cooked foods and that our bodies need food with electric current (no cooked food, oil, canned, fried, etc. will carry an electric current or old (older than 1 hour after being processed: i.e. blended, or juiced) raw food either. I would encourage you to use some energy soup: 1/2 a blender of watermelon or organic papaya or apples blended with 1 tablespoon of soaked dulse leaf (a purple seaweed that contains every mineral and trace mineral that exists plus B12) and flax seeds (for the EFAs), and 1 package or 2 packed cups of organic dark green leafy greens, mixed with parsley, dandelion (no spinach), half a dozen figs that are raw or reconstituted, and pour the blend into a bowl and dice 1/4th (2 ounces) of a small avocado in the am and 12 soaked overnight, rinsed and blended organic almonds in the p.m.

Eat this as often as you wish, chewing every mouthful 30 times at least before you swallow it, and think only about the wonderful food that is sharing it's energy with you.

VapoRub and Toenail fungus; Myth or Fact?

Vicks Toenail fungus can be a vexing problem that can last for years with no obvious solution, so if Vicks VapoRub does work it would be a boon for many people. Conventional medical anti-fungal treatments can cost thousands of dollars and result in dangerous side effects.

One way to reduce your risk of fungal infections -- cut down on sugar, which helps fungus to grow. Spending some regular time in the ocean or another body of salt water can also help, if you have access to one.
